are basically violent, bloody medieval weapons turned foam. they are composed of a core (usually PVC tube, since it's the cheapest, but graphite is used too) and a wrap of foam around them. The foam layer around the Boffer differs according to intended use; if you're going for full on hits, that may require several layers of padding, maybe an inch and a half, as well as a cloth wrapping to reduce the chance of welts- but if you're just wanting to have a duel with your friends, a PVC tube with pipe insulation or a pool noddle around it should do fine.
